What do our Billboard #1 albums say about American culture?

Another dispatch from the past. Preserved here... for some reason.

11.17.09: In August of 1963, some six months before the Beatles would take over the top spot for the first time (and so for eleven straight weeks), Billboard stopped issuing different charts for mono and stereo recordings. When I get around to writing my big rock n roll book, this is where I want to start.

A few quick interesting notes about 1963-1973:

• There were only 87 non-Beatles albums (or Beatle member solo efforts) in the #1 spot over this time frame. I say only because we're talking about 546 possible slots.
• Fuck, The Monkees were outrageously popular.
• Do not mess with Herb Alpert and/or Herb Albert’s Tijuana Brass and/or Herb Alpert and His Tijuana Brass and/or Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass.
• Interesting how the total # of different top-charting artists seemed to grow exponentially by year. What the hell does that say?
• I want to take a look at this right up to the present day. But at what point do we consider illegal downloading? Is the mythical notion of the #1 album still meaningful?

I've compiled data up to 2001 and I think that's a good place to stop looking and also end my fictional book. That's close to forty years and it ends right around the time a few major things happen: 9/11, the last crazy mega-selling CD binge (NSYNC, etc.) and illegal downloading, which soon after begins to really take over and dramatically impact sales.

I have no interest in explicitly answering the query posed in this blog post title: ultimately, this (partial) list says little about culture in and of itself. But as we near closer to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' debut, I think these #1s (or: the idea of the #1 album) provides a good jumping off point for a discussion on popular trends. Here is every top album from 1963-2001, presented in the following format:
