Excellent design and gif usage/placement in NY Times piece

Obviously the Times have always been on the forefront of topnotch visual web design (yes, yes, obviously), but I thought this piece was especially well put together, overlaying the above animated gif over another image, seamlessly telling so much of the story before the viewer even starts reading. Clearly the move towards fully wordless content is nigh. I don't know what the bigger implications of this are or may be, but I do know that it will only speed up the delivery of content from the creator's end.
